Dalmatian

Dalmation – Exuberant and fun-luving, the Dalmation is an excellent choice for anyone with the time to exercise and train it.  Although it always turns heads, it is much more than a mere fashion accessory.

HISTORY

The handsome Dalmatian’s origins are obsure, but in 19th century Europe, and particularly Britain, its main work was to run beside horse-drawn carriages.  This may have been to protect the travelers inside or perhaps merely for appearance.  It also kept the stables clear of rats.

DESCRIPTION

A picture of elegance, the Dalmatian is of medium size with lean, clean lines of the Pointer, to which it may be related.  It is well muscled and has a short, hard, dense coat of pure white with well defined black or liver coloured spots randomly splashed over it.  The feet are round with well arched toes and the nails are either white or the same colour as the spots.

MALE: 19-23 in (48-58cm)  50-65lb (23-29kg)

FEMALE: 19-23in (48-58cm)  45-60lb (20-27kg)

TEMPERAMENT

Spirited and playful, these dogs adore children and can be trusted with them.  They are rather sensitive, so training takes patience and gentle but firm handling.  They like to spend time with their owners.

GROOMING

The smooth, lustrous, short haired coast is easy to groom.  Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush and bathe only when necessary.

EXERCISE AND FEEDING

A Dalmatian is not an ideal dog for apartment dwellers unless it can be taken out for a brisk walk or run several times a day.  It needs plenty of vigorous exercise.  A premium Dry food is what we recommend.
